A few kilometers from Modica, south of Ragusa, for over 3,000 years Scicli has been located.
From the original nucleus on the San Matteo hill, a small town has gradually developed which, in the late Baroque period, saw a flourishing architectural production.
The historic center, located in the flat part and easily visited on foot, is characterized by beautiful buildings enriched with expressive masks or floral motifs, generally interspersed with railings or wrought iron balconies that make them elegant, sophisticated but at the same time light and a bit weird. A more sober architecture characterizes the most popular neighborhoods that lie on the rocky ridges.
Awarded since 2002 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site due to its appearance as a living nativity scene, made of limestone houses that create a continuity between the urban part and the territory, such as not to see where one ends and the other begins, in a perfect balance of respect and harmony.
If you are a lover of the “Commissioner Montalbano” you will recognize the Commissariat of Vigata, as well as the Municipality of Scicli and the Police Headquarters of Montelusa, as well as Palazzo Penna, chosen by the writer Camilleri and the director Sironi as ideal places to set the story of the most beloved commissioner of Italy.
While a few kilometers away you can reach Punta Secca, a seaside resort where filming took place in the famous villa of Montalbano.
